2010 SRCA Membership…We Need YOU! Once again it’s time to look back and review how Smoke Rise has improved over the past year and account for how your $25 dues were allocated by SRCA. You will be amazed and proud of what a dedicated group of volunteers was able to accomplish… Our 2008 membership (almost 800) represented a whopping 30% increase over the year before and let me outline a few accomplishments that will spur you to put your 2010 check in the mail: We’re most proud of SMOKE RISE PARK. The development of the 11 acres on Hugh Howell across from the elementary school property represents the culmination of almost 4 years work by SRCA. If you haven’t been, you owe it to yourself to walk the mulched paths dotted with wooden footbridges, benches, and picnic table. Take a walk over there, sit on one of the log benches at the top of the hill in the back of the park and marvel that this wonderful community resource has finally come to fruition. The SMOKE RISE GATEWAY MONUMENT at Mountain Creek was completed and landscaped. SMOKE RISE MEDALLIONS are an integral part of our neighborhood branding program. This year the majority of SR subdivisions with entry signs requested installation of medallions. Have you noticed how many are out there? Our President, Charlene Heyward, met with countless neighborhood reps to facilitate orders. Do you know about SRCA’s ongoing programs? Let’s see-- starting with the most visible, have you seen all those STREET SIGN TOPPERS that say “Smoke Rise?” SRCA did that. Had to petition the DeKalb Commissioners, receive design approval, meet with DOT folks, and find someone to fabricate them & then oversee the installation. What about that huge SMOKE STACK at the corner of Hugh Howell and Rosser? What about all those SR CIRCLE MEDALLIONS on the smokestacks? The grass is always trimmed and neat and the mulch fresh at the Rosser Triangle, the grass is cut at the US 78 triangle, and the triangle at Silver Hill as well as the sidewalk and gutter on the approach to Smoke Rise Elementary is maintained & blown off by SRCA’S LANDSCAPE INITIATIVE. Did you attend the neighborhood WINE TASTING at ART Station on February 7th? That’s the third one that SRCA has hosted. Have you been to any of the New Neighbor receptions we’ve sponsored? How about one of the numerous free “MOVIES ON THE GREEN?”—some with door prizes and catering?Did you participate in the SRCA FUN RUN benefiting Smoke Rise Elementary and neighborhood improvement projects? How about the pre-election CANDIDATE FORUMS? Did you see your neighbors volunteering quarterly to pick up roadside trash? That’s the SRCA NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP that led to the organization’s participation in the DOT’s “Adopt a Highway” program. Have you ever reached for your FREE SMOKE RISE DIRECTORY? SRCA tackles that monumental task every 3 years and maintains a website WWW.SMOKERISE.ORG which is being redesigned this year to make it even more user friendly. Somebody on the SRCA Board is the point person who writes letters and contacts CODE ENFORCEMENT when properties do not meet neighborhood standards or when autos are left in the right-of-way. We organize the ANNUAL MEETING, give out GOOD GUY NEIGHBOR AWARDS, attend DeKalb County meetings, interact with adjacent neighborhoods and associations, and generally serve as the eyes and ears for the betterment of Smoke Rise. SRCA represents neighborhoods including Ashridge, Bahia Mar, Barrington View, Bowers, Brentwood,Chartwell Trace, Chastleton, Eastgate Trail, Eastgate Woods, Fremar Hills, The Forest, Gunwoody, Heritage Manor, Howell Highlands, Ivey Oaks, Kanawha, Kings Mountain, Knightsbridge, Lichenhearth, Millstone, Mountain Creek, Mountain Glen, Mountain Shadow, Mountain West, Mountclaire, Natchez Trace, Oakwood, Patriot Hills, Plantation, Princewill, Silver Hill, Silver Ridge, Silversmith, Spencers Mountain, Stone Creek, Stratmor Hills, Stone Creek, The Summit and everything in-between. It adds up to almost 2300 households. Although our dues have remained constant at $25 for many years and are probably in line for an adjustment, the Board voted to hold that figure in our current economic climate. A record 782 households were members last year and we’re targeting 110% in ’09 or 860+. It will come as no surprise that after polling comparable neighborhoods concerning their community association dues, we found that Smoke Rise/SRCA represents far and above the best value for dues investment. We appreciate your generous support to fund improvements that all benefit our superior quality of life and real estate investment. 2010 Census
SRCA has been designated a Census Ambassador by DeKalb Commissioner Connie Stokes of Super District 7. A full and accurate count of citizens will enable DeKalb to get its fair share of more than $400 billion of available funds to support vital local services such as health care, schools, law enforcement, transportation, and social services. On a national level, it is estimated that Georgia could potentially gain 2 additional congressional seats if everyone is counted. We will be provide updated information after the first of the year.
