Update on Smoke Rise Park

Love the feet/paws—hate the vehicles! The shoulder of Hugh Howell Road is NOT designated parking for the greenspace.  It is dangerous and is packing down an area that is slated for landscaping this Spring. Park at the elementary school lot and walk the short distance.  Best yet, just walk to the park as your destination and shrink your carbon footprint! Some drivers have even been pulling into the maintenance driveway at the southeast side of the park. The county will be putting a barrier at that entrance since it was designed for delivery of mulch, park furniture, trash cans etc.

We have had tremendous response from Garden Clubs and area Master Gardeners wanting to volunteer their time and expertise in cultivating the natural beauty of the park. Look for upcoming improvements!

Look for a public dedication of our great new park coming soon. DeKalb County is putting finishing touches on the interior and we expect landscaping at the entrance.

Community Garden Anyone?

Many community vegetable gardens are sprouting up around town. Is anyone interested in pursuing a neighborhood plot? It would be a great way to meet people and join the burgeoning “farm to table” movement. We’ll need someone to allow us to sharecrop (for lack of a better word..) a sunny patch of dirt.

Calling All Smoke Rise Garden Clubs!

Smoke Rise Park is complete and would benefit greatly from the creativity and caring touch of our garden club members & master gardeners. Please consider signing up to install native Georgia plants, perennials, trees etc to accent and attract wildlife to this wonderful new community resource. The Mountain Mums have volunteered, but we will need the know-how and trowels of everyone.

News Bites 2010 Census SRCA has been designated a Census Ambassador by DeKalb Commissioner Connie Stokes of Super District 7. A full and accurate count of citizens will enable DeKalb to get its fair share of more than $400 billion of available funds to support vital local services such as health care, schools, law enforcement, transportation, and social services. On a national level, it is estimated that Georgia could potentially gain 2 additional congressional seats if everyone is counted. We will be provide updated information after the first of the year.
